Its been a couple of days since my last post, I went down to New Paltz to see my girlfriend :). We went to go see Babel, which was an amazing movie. I was speechless for about 10 minutes after leaving the theater. I would describe it as "Foreign Policy 'Crash'". It's gonna come out on DVD in a week, definately check it out. I was completely opposed to any movie trying to better The Departed for the best picture oscar, however I couldn't be upset if Babel wins.
I read a statement from an interview with John Howard, Prime Minister from Australia, in which he states that the terrorists in Iraq are praying that Barack Obama wins the presidency in '08. This comes 2 days after Mr. Obama through his name in the ring to become the sucessor of Dub-ya. Mr. Howard is a strong supporter of the Iraq war, and of the Bush Administration. The question being presented at this point is how much credibility Mr. Howard has in this matter, seeing as he sent only 1,400 to the region. It seems as if the conservative Prime Minister wants to shake American public opinion of the Illinois junior senator, who seems to be one of the more promising candidates in the '08 race.
In my opinion, this shows that the conservative base, not just in America apparently, seems a little bit intimidated by the following of Barack Obama. Obama, who states he opposed the Iraq war from the beginning, which will be the obvious hot-button issue facing the candidates in the upcoming election. It seems like politicians are campaigning all year long as opposed to before an election. Arguments in Washington are always a partisan battle, instead of getting to the real issues. The way they debate Iraq for instance, the Democrats can't come to consensus on a plan to oppose the war, without there GOP counterparts attacking them for not supporting our troops. And the Republicans are in a battle whether to back our Commander and Chief, or support something that would have an immediate impact on their political careers. Most of those Republicans pulling away from the pro-war base are coming from districts opposed from the war, or have a large number of war casualties represented. When I'm asked about my stance on our situation on Iraq, I try to think about Bush's State of the Union address when he brought to the public attention that he received intelligence that Saddam Hussein had Weapons of Mass Destruction. He was sure about this he said, and who could blame him at the time. He had every intelligence source around him saying that the Hussein regime was an imminent threat to our national security base. In reality, George Bush, was trying to do the best thing for our country in our post-9/11 society. The American people at the time, including all the politicians in Washington, from both the left and right who voted to go to war, were on the same page at the time. The main mistake that was made was after the "Shock and Awe" bombing campaign, and we threw Saddam from power. There wasn't a proper exit strategy in place to account for the Sunni and Shiite muslims, who would then be competing for power and oil-profits. Bush decided to "Stay the course". Recently, within the last 3 weeks, six helicopters have been shot down in Iraq. Most of the American public is not aware that we have lost more US troops in Iraq than US citizens in the attack on 9/11. Technically, those numbers are higher. I once heard a media source state that if a soldier is wounded, and air-lifted to another hospital, they are not counted in the war casualty statistics. These are realities that the Bush Administration will have to live with, I just hope that the recent troop surge proposed and the change in strategy in Iraq can help bring the peace and bring our troops home.
I hope my opinion about Iraq isn't mistaken for not supporting the troops. I have a cousin right now in the Sunni Triangle, and I can only dream of having the courage that those men and women have to make that sacrifice for our country.
And that's my post, on this, the 1,4001st day since the declaration of "Mission Accomplished" in Iraq. Later!!!!
